Buffalo kick returner Andre Roberts, who was named a Pro Bowl starter as a return specialist this week, took the ensuing kickoff 49 yards. Buffalo converted its first third-down with a 2-yard run by Isaiah McKenzie. Quarterback Josh Allen completed for 17 yards to Gabriel Davis, who fumbled but recovered at the Patriots' 25-yard line. Running back Devin Singletary ran for 4 yards and took a short pass 10 yards to set up first-and-10 from the 11. New England went three-and-out on its second possession, with defensive end Quinton Jefferson sacking Newton for a 13-yard loss on third down. Patriots punter Jake Bailey punted 62 and Roberts returned it 7 yards to the Bills' 30.

Buffalo converted a fake punt on its second drive. Facing a fourth-and-five, the Bills gave a direct snap to safety Jaquan Johnson, who threw to a wide open Siran Neal for 13 yards. New England didn't have a player line up on Neal, who caught the pass uncovered along the right sideline. Buffalo went for on the following fourth-and-1 and Allen kept it for a 22-yard run. On the next play, Allen threw to running back Taiwan Jones in the end zone but Jones dropped the pass. Rookie running back Zack Moss bulled ahead for 11 yards up the middle and defensive tackle Adam Butler jumped offsides for the second time of the game, negating an interception by cornerback J. C. Jackson.

New England started with terrible field position when Donte Moncrief was tackled at its 9-yard line on the kickoff return. The Patriots got a first down on a pass interference penalty on Buffalo cornerback Tre'Davious White. James White ran for 8 yards, Michel picked up 6 on the ground and Newton completed an 7-yard screen pass to Byrd. Michel ripped off a 21-yard run, J. J. Allen threw a beautiful pass down the seam for Knox for 24 yards to start Buffalo's possession. The Bills went for it on another fourth-and-1 and Knox caught a deflected pass for a 12-yard gain. Allen scrambled for 11 yards on third-and-7 to get Buffalo in the red zone.
