So what is handicap betting? And what’s the difference between 3-way handicap and an Asian handicap bet? If you want the 3 way handicap bet explained, pay close attention to the following example. It’s actually quite easy.

So, as I said, a handicap betmodifies the outcomeof the football game by levelling out the playing field. For example, FC Barcelona play Girona, the Catalans are huge favourites. To even things out, the bookmaker gives Girona a two-goal advantage before the match starts (+2). This means the following:

• Barcelona win 3:0 – the 3-way handicap outcome is 3:2 – 1
• Barcelona win 2:0 – the outcome is 2:2, so it’s a draw – X
• Barcelona wins 1:0 – the handicap result is 1:2, Barcelona lose, so it’s a handicap win for Girona – 2.

This is a very clear illustration of how the 3-way handicap market works. In contrast, an Asian variant of the bet has only two outcomes. This is because, in this market, the bookmaker evens the forces out by giving Girona a one-and-a-half goal advantage (+1.5). Take a look at the same match once again:
